April Snowstorm Could Drop Up to 6 Inches on Berkshires
09:30AM / Friday, April 17, 2020

Much of the Berkshires woke to a blanket of snow on Wednesday morning, a sure sign that winter isn't over yet.

And it looks like it will make another return on Saturday morning.

The National Weather Service in Albany, N.Y., has issued a winter weather advisory from 7 Friday evening through 10 a.m. Saturday. Snowfall rates of half an inch to an inch an hour are possible.

This is because of a polar vortex sitting over Canada that has forced jet stream to dip far into the south, allowing colder air to cover the Northeast.

"Since cold air will be more firmly entrenched across the northern tier, there will be opportunities for snow and the likelihood of snowfall for some locations that typically do not get much snow during the middle of April," according to Accuweather.

Up to 3 inches of snowfall is forecast through southern Vermont, Massachusetts and northern Connecticut, with 3-6 inches in the higher ground.

The storm runs from western Iowa across the Midwest and through central/southern New York and Masachusetts. Central Berkshire is in the 3 to 6 inch zone with surrounding areas expected to get up to 3.

"We expect several inches of snow to fall mainly on non-paved surfaces from the northern tier of Pennsylvania to the southern tier of New York state," AccuWeather Senior Meteorologist Brian Wimer said. "Pockets of moderate to heavy accumulating snow can also extend over the Catskills in eastern New York state as well as the Berkshires in southwestern New England and perhaps the southern parts of the mountains in Vermont and New Hampshire."

But any lingering snow should disappear quickly as the weekend returns to more seasonal numbers with sunny skies and warming temperatures in the 50s and 60s by Sunday.
