The competition series consists of four levels of competition – school, chapter, state and national. Each level of competition is comprised of four rounds – Sprint, Target, Team and Countdown Round.
NORTH ADAMS, Mass. — Drury High School students placed six out of 11 teams at Math Counts competition at Deerfield Academy on Feb. 1.
Math Counts Foundation is a nonprofit organization that reaches students in grades six through eight in all U.S. states and territories with three extra-curricular programs. More than a quarter million students participate in Math Counts programs or use their resources each year.
This year, for the first time, North Adams students are participating through the Math Counts Club after school and the competition series.
Melissa Cairns, seventh grade math teacher at Drury and Math Counts coach, said she was excited about the opportunity.
"This is a great chance for Drury students to participate at a high academic level with students from other schools. We have so many truly talented, highly intelligent students; Math Counts will be a great way for them to show off their skills and challenge themselves," she said.
The competition series consists of four levels of competition – school, chapter, state and national. Each level of competition is comprised of four rounds – Sprint, Target, Team and Countdown Round.
The Sprint Round focuses on speed and accuracy and students have 40 minutes to complete 30 math problems without a calculator. The Target Round focuses on problem-solving and mathematical reasoning and students receive four pairs of problems and have six minutes to complete each pair, assuming the use of a calculator. The Team round focuses on problem-solving and collaboration. Students have 20 minutes to complete 10 math problems, assuming the use of a calculator. Only four students on a school's team can take this round officially. Finally, the Countdown Round focuses on speed and accuracy. Students have a maximum of 45 seconds per problem without a calculator. This round is "unofficial" at the Connecticut Chapter competition this weekend.

"While only four are allowed to compete in the team portion of the contest, all of these students are truly part of our Math Counts team," Cairns said. "In addition to being academically bright, this is simply just a great group of kids, and I'm delighted to be spending the day with them."
