Morgan Shafer is greeted at home plate after her three-run home run on Tuesday.

Sarah Sweet struck out a pair in a complete game win.
NORTH ADAMS, Mass. -- The heart of the order was the key to victory for Met Life Tuesday in the first game of the Pat Torchia Women’s Softball League championship series.

Morgan Shafer and Liz Gallagher combined to go 7-for-8 with a homer run and four doubles to lead Met Life to an 11-3 win over Bigg Daddy’s at Disanty Field.

Bigg Daddy’s will look to stay alive in the best-of-three series Wednesday evening at 6 p.m.

Shafer (3-for-4) hit a three-run homer and doubled twice, and Gallagher went 4-for-4 with a pair of doubles and a pair of RBIs as Met Life built a 10-run lead going to the bottom of the seventh.

It started to build that lead in the first, cashing in on three errors to score four times. Morgan Kierstead drove in a pair of runs with a single up the middle, and Mary Malloy singled and drove in a run in the rally.

After those early miscues, the Bigg Daddy’s defense settled down behind starting pitcher Jen Choquette, but Met Life’s Sarah Sweet held the opposing offense at bay.

Big Daddy’s managed a run in the second, when Lisa Williams, Becky Duquette and Kate Haring started the inning with three straight singles.

Sweet got some help from her defense to get out of trouble. The first of two Met Life double plays started when Shafer at second fielded a ground ball and threw to Kierstead at first; Kierstead relayed to catcher Melissa Girard, who tagged out a runner attempting to score on the play.

Met Life picked up its second double play in the fifth, when Gallagher in left caught a fly ball and threw to Kierstead to double off a runner.

Sweet, meanwhile, stranded seven runners through the first six innings to hold Bigg Daddy’s to one run.

In the seventh, Marian Rennell and Darlene Fagley each drove in a run as Bigg Daddy’s picked up a pair of unearned runs off Sweet.

Met Life’s offense, meanwhile, picked up a pair of runs in the third and two more in the fifth to make it 8-1.

In the seventh, Girard and Brittany Breault (2-for-4) each singled ahead of Shafer’s blast over the fence in left-center to give Met Life a commanding 11-1 lead.
