MCLA Softball Team Earns Sweep

NORTH ADAMS, Mass. -- The MCLA softball team allowed just one run all afternoon as they swept past the visiting Worcester State Lancers 8-0 and 7-1 Friday in MASCAC action.
 
The Trailblazers improved to 10-18 overall but are now 5-5 in the conference. The Lancers drop to 6-30 overall and are 5-7 in the conference.
 
Game One
The opening game was scoreless after two innings of play. The Trailblazers finally broke through with four runs in the third inning to take control.  Kaylyn Holliday started the scoring with an RBI single scoring Kayla Baker for a 1-0 lead. Erika Quackenbush ripped another RBI single scoring Kara Adams to make it 2-0.  MCLA would add two more runs on Nevada Nelsen's sacrifice fly and Sam Feinstein drew a walk with the bases loaded to increase the lead to 4-0.
 
The Trailblazers tacked on another run in the fifth inning on Quackenbush's sac fly and then ended the contest with a three run fifth. Adams had the key hit as she hit a bases loaded gapper bringing home all three runs to end the contest.
 
Feinstein earned the win as she went the distance allowing just two hits. She struck out two batters.  
 
Adams and McCann Tech graduate Alanza Quinones each had three hits to pace the offense. Adams had three RBIs while Quackenbush had two.
 
Game Two
In the nightcap, the Lancers scored a run in the top of the first, but the lead was short lived. MCLA exploded for six runs in the bottom of the first inning and chased Lancer starter Liv Larson.  
 
Nelsen started the scoring with an RBI single.  Quinones added one of her own to give MCLA the lead at 2-1. A walk to Trinity Shellard brought home another and then Drury graduate Cassie Crosier belted a two run double to left to increase the lead to 5-1. Adams capped the inning with a sac fly and MCLA led 6-1.
 
Neither team would generate much offense the rest of the way as MCLA tacked on an insurance tally in the fifth on a Quinones sac fly to make it 7-1.
 
Morgan Watson did the rest as she went all 7 innings to improve to 2-2 on the season. She allowed just three hits in recording the win. Crosier led the offense with a pair of hits as the Trailblazers outhit the Lancers 6-3 in the win.
 
MCLA is off until Monday when it heads to Bridgewater State for a doubleheader.
 
Women's Lacrosse
NORTH ADAMS, Mass. -- Alyssa Blumenthal scored five goals and added five assists as the Massachusetts Maritime Women's Lacrosse team rolled past the MCLA Trailblazers tonight 17-1 at Shewcraft Field in North Adams.
 
With the win, the Bucs improve to 8-6 overall and are 2-3 in the MASCAC.  MCLA dips to 1-9 overall and is 0-5 in the conference.
 
Mass Maritime left little doubt in this one as they raced out to a commanding lead. It led 4-0 after ten minutes of play and eventually 11-0 at the half. The Bucs cruised in the second half as they weren't challenged and went on to the victory.
 
Anna Deely added five goals for the Bucs to complement Blumenthal. Casey Sullivan collected four goals and an assist to aid the offense. 
 
Laura Kleber stopped one shot to collect the win and was the beneficiary of the Bucs offense as she improved to 8-6.
 
The lone goal scored for MCLA was by BArT Charter graduate Ciera Dowling. Zoe Elwell notched five saves in defeat.
 
Prior to the contest, MCLA honored Dowling, Elwell, and Brianna Morris as part of senior night.
 
Baseball
NORTH ADAMS, Mass. -- The visiting Worcester State baseball team received a pair of complete game pitching performances and Andrew Miller homered in game two to lift the Lancers to a doubleheader sweep of the MCLA Trailblazers this afternoon.
 
Worcester State took game one 4-0 behind a stellar effort from Sean Mahan. They nipped the Trailblazers in the nightcap 5-4 as Miller's HR was the key blow. The Lancers improve to 16-13 overall and are now 8-7 in the league. The Trailblazers dip to 9-21 overall and are 3-12 in the MASCAC.
 
Game One
Worcester State's Sean Mahan tossed a four hit shutout while Jake Breton went 2-3 with two RBI's to lift the Lancers to a 4-0 win in the opening game of the doubleheader.  Worcester State did all their offensive damage in the opening two innings off MCLA starter Bobby New.
 
In the first inning, Ben Palatino came home on a balk and then Seth Leslie drove in Breton with a single to make it 2-0. They added a pair of runs in the second inning with Breton getting the key hit. He sliced a double into right field that brought home a pair of runs to increase the lead to 4-0. MCLA escaped further damage when Austin Rachiele made a diving catch in right field to end the frame.
 
From there, the story was Mahan. He kept the MCLA offense at bay as he threw just 76 pitches and didn't walk a batter. He improved to 2-3 on the season with the win.
 
MCLA's New (4-4) took the loss as he went the distance.  He allowed nine hits and struck out two Lancers.  Rachiele had a pair of hits to pace the MCLA offense.
 
Game Two
In the nightcap, the game was scoreless through two innings of play. In the third, the Lancers took a short lived advantage as Seth Leslie drove home Andrew Miller with a groundout for a 1-0 lead. In the bottom half of the frame, the Trailblazers scored three times to take the lead.
 
Jake Ferrara's single scored Dillon Maxon to tie things up at 1-1. Christian Seariac then sliced a double to left field scoring Ben Durland to put MCLA up 2-1. They added another run on a Lancer miscue to take a 3-1 advantage.
 
The Lancers quickly rebounded though as Miller hit a towering three run homer to left to give WSU the lead back at 4-3 after four innings of play. 
 
MCLA tied it up once again in the bottom of the fifth as Seariac scampered across via a wild pitch to make it 4-4. Worcester scored the deciding run in the sixth inning.
 
Sam Allen led off with a bunt single and was quickly sacrificed to second base bringing Ben Palatino to the plate.  He grounded out to third, but Allen advanced to third on the play and scored as the throw from Maxon was wide and Allen scored what would be the go ahead run.
 
Lancer starter Kyle Gray made it stand as he worked around a base runner in the seventh, but held on to collect the win. He improved to 5-1 on the season as he scattered nine hits and struck out two Trailblazers.  Miller was 2-4 with 3 RBI's to pace the offense while Allen was 2-2 and reached base all three times. 
 
MCLA's Ferrara, Seariac, and Maxon each had two hits to lead the team. Brendan Kelly went the distance, but fell to 1-5 on the season.
 
The Trailblazers are off until Tuesday when they head to Anna Maria for a non-league matchup.
