MCLA Tennis Downs Lyndon State

BENNINGTON, Vt. -- The MCLA mixed tennis team cruised to an 8-1 North Atlantic Conference (NAC) win this afternoon over visiting Vermont's Lyndon State.
 
MCLA (3-4, 1-1 NAC) started fast and never looked back. Charles Najimy and Matt Bluteau earned a point in the top doubles slot with a hard fought 8-6 win over Patrick Wickstrom and Neal Mulligan.  Nick Castle and Sam Gawron defeated Kyle Leighton and Mukhtar Abdullahi 8-2 in the second slot for another point.  Briana Higgins and Mackenna Jordan rolled to an 8-1 win in the third doubles slot to give MCLA a 3-0 advantage heading into singles play.
 
Najimy earned his second tough point of the afternoon by dispatching of Wickstrom 2-6, 6-1, 10-5 for his second point.  Castle, Gawron, Higgins, and Felix Bou earned straight set singles victories for MCLA.
 
The Hornets (0-5, 0-1) got their lone point when Mulligan defeated Bluteau in the match of the day.  Mulligan earned a 7-6, 7-6 win over Bluteau.
 
MCLA is back at it Sunday when it hosts NVU-Johnson in another NAC matchup.
 
Baseball
NORTHBOROUGH, Mass. -- The Fitchburg State baseball team received a pair of outstanding pitching performances from Richard Sharp and Tommy Parsons as they handed the MCLA Trailblazers a pair of 10-0 defeats Saturday afternoon in MASCAC action at the New England Baseball Complex.
 
Game One
Fitchburg started fast on offense plating a pair of runs in each of the first three frames.  Vincent Eramo homered in the first inning to kick off the scoring against MCLA's Bobby New.  Brandon Lefebvre and Nicholas Cordeau traded RBI doubles to increase the margin to 4-0 after two innings, and when Brennan Cuddahy drilled a two run homer, it was 6-0 in favor of the Falcons.
 
The rest of the story was Sharp.  He went the distance and allowed just two hits while striking out five Trailblazers in the process.  He improved to 3-1 on the season.
 
Fitchburg added a solo run in the fourth and then closed out the scoring with three more runs in the sixth of Max Gabrielly.
 
New took the loss going just 3.1 innings.
 
Game Two
Once again, the Falcons (13-5, 5-0) started fast. This time, they got to MCLA's Brendan Kelly.  After  sacrifice fly made it 1-0, Timothy Horton singled home two runs to increase the lead to 3-0.  The Falcons added a solo run in the third on Joshua Macomber's HR and then put the game away with two runs in each of the next three frames.
 
Meanwhile, Fitchburg starter Tommy Parsons was in cruise control. He went six innings and scattered just four hits.  He struck out 9 Trailblazers in the process to improve to 2-0 on the season.
 
Kelly took the loss for MCLA (6-15, 0-6). Fitchburg outhit the Trailblazers 12-5 in the nightcap.
 
The two teams will meet in the season finale Sunday at 2 p.m. at Joe Wolfe Field in North Adams.
 
Softball
FITCHBURG, Mass. – The Fitchburg State University softball team picked up a sweep of conference rival MCLA in Massachusetts State Collegiate Athletic Conference action Saturday afternoon from Coolidge Park as the Falcons notched a 4-1 triumph in the opener before completing the sweep with a 2-1 victory in the nightcap.
 
Game One
Fitchburg State took a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the third as junior McKenzie Lambert (Wilbraham, Mass.) singled to plate senior Maddie Medina (Pelham, N.H.) before the Trailblazers knotted the score (1-1) in the top of the fifth when Kaylyn Holliday (Catskill, N.Y.) single left field to bring in junior Kara Adams (Walden, N.Y.).
 
The Falcons regained the lead in their half of the fifth with senior Melissa DiPhilippo (Norfolk, Mass.) drove in senior Hayley McCarthy (Lawrence, Mass.) with a groundout, while Lambert added an RBI groundout that scored Medina later in the inning for the 3-1 edge.
 
The Green and Gold capped the scoring in the bottom of the sixth as McCarthy singled to center field that plated senior Michelle LeBlanc (Ashburnham, Mass.), resulting in the 4-1 final.
 
Game Two
Fitchburg State (16-8, 4-0) grabbed a 1-0 advantage in the bottom of the third when Lambert launched a solo home run to straight away center field for her third homer on the season. MCLA tied the contest (1-1) as sophomore Alanza Quinones (Cohoes, N.Y.) brought home senior Erika Quackenbush (Hoosick Falls, N.Y.) with a double to right center.
 
The Falcons answered back in the bottom half of the fourth as LeBlanc groundout to shortstop to drive in senior Nicole Sylvester (Everett, Mass.), who had reached on a walk to start off the frame, resulting in the 2-1, game two final.
 
The Trailblazers (5-17, 0-4) will travel to Westfield State on Tuesday for a conference double header at 2 p.m.
 
Women's Lacrosse
NORTH ADAMS, Mass. -- Fitchburg State's Sarah Napolitano scored five goals and nine different Falcons found the net as they defeated the MCLA Trailblazers 16-5 this afternoon in MASCAC action.
 
MCLA (0-6, 0-2) scored the game's first goal as Brianna Morris converted a Kim Granito feed for a 1-0 early advantage just 27 seconds into the contest.  Fitchburg responded by scoring the next seven goals to take a commanding 7-1 lead.
 
Sarah Napolitano had three goals in the run for the Falcons (2-8, 1-1). Granito stopped the bleeding by scoring consecutive goals to pull the Trailblazers within 7-3.  Fitchburg had the answer though as they outscored 3-1 over the final minutes of the half to lead 10-4 at the break.
 
Fitchburg outshot MCLA 24-12 in the half.
 
The Falcons outscored MCLA 6-1 over the closing thirty minutes of play to pull away to the victory.
 
Tracy Long added four goals and two assist in the win. Marguerite Belcher earned the win stopping six shots on the afternoon.
 
Granito paced MCLA with four goals.  Shannon Prouty stopped seven shots in the loss.
