Called “essential, like water or air,” by A.O. Scott of The New York Times, his 2015 book, Between the World and Me, was a #1 New York Times bestseller and winner of the National Book Award and the NAACP Image Award. His most recent book, We Were Eight Years in Power: An American Tragedy, is a collection of his essays on the Obama presidency and its aftermath.

About the bands: Troy, New York-based musician Zan Strumfeld (Zan & the Winter Folk) has carved her own little niche of winter folk—lullabies for the lonely, anthems for the revivalists, ballads for the hopeful. With a soulful and seductive vulnerability, Zan's songs of love and heartbreak are complemented by the indie folk/bluegrass sound of her band. In 2018, Zan and The Winter Folk were named the Best Folk Band of 2018 by The Alt and have opened for acts including Grammy-nominated Robbie Fulks, Sean Rowe, Ben Caplan, and The National Reserve.

Mamma's Marmalade's fresh take on traditional American music transforms the conventional bluegrass experience into a raucous barnyard party that refuses to let you sit. Since their formation in 2014, the five-piece string band has been fusing diverse musical backgrounds into a sound that bursts at the seams with energy, exuding a pure joy for creating music. Mamma’s honest lyrics and warm, acoustic tones invite listeners back to a time when wooden instruments and sweet vocal harmonies captivated the hearts of America. Experimenting with intricate instrumentals and lively originals, their music brings the genre to new and unexpected places.

Drawing on the people and events of his childhood primarily, his art is a mix of memories and imagination. This era has been his primary source of inspiration and has allowed him to return to a time when things were much simpler, a look back that generates new curiosity in viewers of all ages. Faceless people spring to life in colorful paint, each piece is a world inhabited by his favorite icons and motifs Children, Animals, Fishing, the Great Outdoors, and New England. His goal is to create something unique yet familiar in a way that resists taking life to seriously.
