MCLA Volleyball Drops a Pair

NORTH ADAMS, Mass. -- The MCLA volleyball team dropped a pair of games Saturday afternoon as they hosted a tri match with Norwich and Lebanon Valley.
 
The Trailblazers fell in five sets to the Cadets in the opening game, 3-2, before Lebanon Valley earned a 3-0 win in the nightcap. Lebanon Valley completed the sweep by defeating Norwich 3-1 as well.
 
The Trailblazers fell to 6-12 on the season with the losses.
 
MCLA took the opening set against Norwich, 25-20, before the Cadets took the next two by scores of 26-24 and 25-23 to take a 2-1 lead.  MCLA forced a fifth set with a 25-23 win of their own before Norwich took the decisive fifth set 15-9 to earn the win.
 
MCLA was paced offensively by Wahconah graduate Sara LaFreniere's team high 15 kills. She added 11 digs. Lee's Ahna Schlaefer collected 10 kills while Tessa Sestito and Beatrice Lechler set up the offense with 27 and 16 assists respectively.  Celine Manigbas notched 29 digs in defeat.  Lechler ended with a double finishing with 13 digs.
 
Lebanon Valley cruised in this one as it took the opening set, 25-18, and the second, 25-11.  It put match away with a 25-14 win in the third.
 
MCLA was led by Sara LaFreniere's team-best seven kills.
 
Women's Cross Country
WESTFIELD, Mass. -- Julie Gambill led a four-runner contingent for MCLA at the James Earley Invitational at Stanley Park.
 
Gambill ran the 5-kilometer course in 21 minutes, 48.27 seconds to place 117th in the 214-runner field.
 
The Trailblazers did not post a team score. The team title went to Smith; Saint Rose' Christine Myers won the individual title in 18:11.97.
 
Men's Cross Country
WESTFIELD, Mass. -- The MCLA men placed 25th out of 29 teams scoring at the James Earley Invitational at Stanley Park.
 
Christopher Gamble led the Trailblazers, finishing 75th out of 210 finishers with a time of 28:32.22.
 
Plymouth State's Sam Brunnette came in first in 25:08.60. Trinity College won the team title despite sitting junior Ace McAlister of Monument Mountain.
