MCLA Welcomes 10 New Faculty Members

NORTH ADAMS, Mass. — Massachusetts College of Liberal Arts recently welcomed 10 new, full-time faculty members, including nine assistant professors and one instructor, to eight departments on campus.

Dr. Travis Beaver has joined MCLA as an assistant professor in the Sociology, Anthropology, and Social Work Department. He comes to the college from Flagler College in St. Augustine, Fla., where he was an assistant professor of sociology. He earned his Ph.D., M.A., and B.A. in sociology from the University of Texas at Austin. His primary research and teaching interests are in the areas of gender and sexuality, with a specific focus on men and masculinities. His forthcoming book chapter based on this research, "Male Femininities," will be published in an edited volume by NYU Press later this year.

Dr. Caren Beilin has joined the campus's English/Communications Department as an assistant professor. She comes to MCLA from her work teaching at the University of the Arts in Philadelphia and as lead consultant for the new feminist and LGBTQ+ library at Swarthmore College's Women's Resource Center in Swarthmore, Pa. She earned a Ph.D. in literature and creative writing from the University of Utah in Salt Lake City, Utah, an M.F.A. in creative writing from the University of Montana in Missoula, Mont., and her B.A. in creative writing from Columbia College in Chicago, Ill.

Dr. Guangzhi Huang comes to MCLA as an assistant professor in interdisciplinary studies from SUNY-Buffalo. He holds a B.A. in English from Guangdong University of Foreign Studies in Guangzhou, China, and an M.A. in American Studies from St. Louis University in St. Louis. He received his Ph.D. in American and Transnational Studies from SUNY- Buffalo. His research focuses urban developments in contemporary China, and the interconnection between urbanization in China and Africa. He is currently involved in the Global Urban History Project (GUHP) which brings together scholars from around the world who devote their research to the intersection of history and urban studies

Dr. Mohamad Junaid has joined MCLA's Sociology, Anthropology, and Social Work Department as an assistant professor of anthropology. A cultural anthropologist, Junaid completed his Ph.D. from the Graduate Center, City University of New York, where he focused on youth politics and self-determination movement in Kashmir. He earned his M.A. in international relations from the Jawaharlal Nehru University in New Delhi, India, and his B.A. in economics, political science and English literature from the Aligarh Muslim University in Aligarh, India. He comes to the College from a teaching position at Hobart and William Smith Colleges in Geneva, N.Y.

Dr. Amanda Kleintop has joined the College as an assistant professor of history in the Department of History, Political Science and Public Policy. She received a B.A. in history from the University of Richmond in Richmond, Va., and both an M.A. and Ph.D. in history from Northwestern University in Evanston, Ill.  Kleintop's research and teaching interests are in 19th-century U.S. history, the South, the Civil War, slavery, and emancipation in the Atlantic World.

Nicole Marmillo, Class of 2016, has joined the campus as the clinical education coordinator, as well as an instructor of athletic training, in the Biology Department. She will teach athletic training management, therapeutic modalities and clinical experiences in athletic training. She earned an M.S. in kinesiology from the University of Nevada in Las Vegas, Nev., where she most recently was working on her Ph.D., and where she worked as a graduate assistant in the Department of Kinesiology and Nutrition Sciences. Marmillo earned her B.S. in athletic training from MCLA.

Dr. Jerome Socolof has joined the Department of Fine and Performing Arts as an assistant professor of arts management. He holds a Bachelor of Music degree in music business from SUNY-Potsdam, and both an M.A. in arts policy and administration and a Ph.D. in art education with a concentration in cultural policy and administration from The Ohio State University in Columbus, Ohio. He comes to MCLA from the University of Houston-Downtown in Houston, Texas, where he was an assistant professor of arts administration and an adjunct instructor of arts leadership.

Dr. Sara Steele comes to MCLA from Eastern Kentucky University in Richmond, Ky. She has joined MCLA's Department of Psychology as an assistant professor of psychology. She earned her B.S. in psychology from Kutztown University of Pennsylvania in Kutztown, Pa., and her Ph.D. in cognitive psychology from the University of Alabama in Tuscaloosa, Ala., where she taught classes in Introduction to Psychology, Cognitive Psychology, Biological Psychology, Research Methods, Statistics and History of Psychology.

Dr. Guodong Wang comes to the college from the South Dakota School of Mines and Technology in Rapid City, S.D., where he was a research scientist. He joins MCLA as an assistant professor of computer science in the Department of Computer Science. He received his Ph.D. in computer software theory and his M.S. in computer science from the Graduate University of Chinese Academy of Sciences in Beijing, China; and his B.A. in electrical engineering from Henan Polytechnic University in Henan, China. His primary research focuses on computer networking, software defined networks (SDN), Internet of Things (IoT) and smart grid networks.

Dr. Qian Wang has joined MCLA as an assistant professor of journalism in the Department of English/Communications. She holds a B.A. in journalism from the Renmin University of China in Beijing, China, her M.A. in mass communication from the University of Florida in Gainesville, Fla., and a Ph.D. in journalism from The University of Texas at Austin. Her teaching experience focuses on multimedia/digital news production, news writing, new media and communication, as well as women and news. She has served as a multimedia lab instructor for almost two years, teaching a variety of multimedia applications. Prior to attending graduate school, Qian was an editor and reporter at various news media outlets in the United States and China.
