NORTH ADAMS, Mass. -- The visiting Western New England University men's soccer team scored twice in the opening half and never looked back as it defeated the MCLA Trailblazers, 3-0, Sunday afternoon at Shewcraft Field.
The Golden Bears (1-1) struck late in the 18th minute as a player was taken down in the box. Nick Liccardi took the penalty kick and calmly deposited it into the lower left corner for a 1-0 advantage. The goal was his second of the season.
Neither team generated much offense for most of the half, but then in the 41st minute, WNE finally extended the lead. Josh Labonte sent a high cross towards the right far post that Matt Remillard headed home to increase the margin to 2-0. The marker was Remillard's first of the season.
In the opening half, WNE held a 9-5 shot advantage over MCLA (0-2) and a slight 3-2 edge in corners.
In the second half, WNE tallied in the 66th minute when Connor Prindle converted a Brendan Siegel pass for a 3-0 lead. The Golden Bears were never threatened from there.
WNE outshot MCLA 17-6 and 8-1 in the second half alone. Sam Brewer collected the win in net for WNE stopping the only shot he saw.
Sean Bradshaw absorbed the loss for the Trailblazers.
MCLA is off until next weekend when it hosts the CIAO Classic on Friday against Morrisville State.
