*******Rescheduled from March 8******

Join us for a night out with Sammus

Sammus (Enongo Lumumba-Kasongo) is an Ithaca-raised, Philadelphia-based rap artist, producer, and PhD student in the Department of Science & Technology Studies at Cornell University. Known as much for her rousing stage presence as she is for her prowess as a beatmaker and lyricist, Sammus has spent the past several years cultivating a strong following of activists, hip hop heads, punks, and self-identified nerds and geeks, among others. As noted by the Los Angeles Times, Sammus “has a gift for getting a message across.” Having recently made her Don Giovanni debut (while remaining tied to NuBlack Music Group), she is poised to cement herself as an artist who consistently thinks outside boxes and dances across lines (and does other neat things with geometrical figures).

Following her performance will be a DJ set/dance party with Flexibee entertainment DJ Augie (MCLA Senior Augie Ndayikeza) a music aficionado who blends hip-hop, reggae, pop, and African music.

April 14th
International Slow Art Day

Slow Art Day is a global event with a simple mission: help more people discover for themselves the joy of looking at and loving art.

How does it work?

One day each year – April 14 in 2018 – people all over the world visit local museums and galleries to look at art slowly. Participants look at five works of art for 10 minutes each and then meet together over lunch to talk about their experience. That’s it. Simple by design, the goal is to focus on the art and the art of seeing.

Why slow? When people look slowly at a piece of art they make discoveries. The most important discovery they make is that they can see and experience art without an expert (or expertise). And that’s an exciting discovery. It unlocks passion and creativity and helps to create more art lovers.

Sankofa - Kofa High

Free
for more information

The foundations of contemporary stepping emerged in the United States during the 1900s as an aspect of performed self and group affirmation for African-American Greek letter sororities and fraternities. At Williams, this history began in 1996 when five students introduced the tradition to friends. As a result, interest in the power of bodies moving in unison to create sound and motion grew. They named themselves Sankofa, a word and concept from the Akan people of Ghana that can be translated as “reach back and get it.” Sankofa acknowledges its roots and uses Hip-Hop, spoken word and media to keep stepping contemporary.
