MCLA Volleyball Secures Home Match in Conference Tourney

NORTH ADAMS, Mass. -- The MCLA Volleyball team cruised to a pair of 3-0 wins over Massachusetts Maritime Academy this afternoon in the MASCAC finale for both schools.
 
With the win in game one, the Trailblazers earned the fourth seed in next week's MASCAC championship. MCLA (11-17, 4-3 MASCAC) will host Bridgewater State on Wednesday night at 7 p.m. MMA fell to 3-26 with the setbacks.
 
Match One:  The Trailblazers took the opening set 25-8 before taking the second in similar fashion 25-5.  They would close out the match with a 25-10 win in the third.
 
MCLA helped its cause with 21 aces in the match. Tayler Wiese notched seven while Parker Snyder and Michelle Laga each had four. Maggie Allen and Bri O'Rourke each collected five kills in the match. Natasha Stewart added eight assists.
 
MMA was hampered by 28 errors in the match. Marie Harrison led the Bucs with 4 kills.
 
Match Two: MCLA took game two by set scores of 25-7, 25-7, and 25-13 to earn the sweep.
 
Allen notched a match-best nine kills in the nightcap to pace the offense. O'Rourke added five more to her totals. Wiese collected 24 assists in the win for the Trailblazers. Michelle Laga paced the defense with 12 digs.
 
In between matches, MCLA honored their six seniors.  Maggie Allen, Bri O'Rourke, Tayler Wiese, Michelle Laga, Melissa Hopkins, and Mele Enomoto each played her final regular season home match on Saturday.
 
Women’s Soccer
BRIDGEWATER, Mass. -- The Bridgewater State University women's soccer team secured a share of the Massachusetts State Collegiate Athletic Conference regular season title on Saturday as the Bears blanked visiting MCLA, 4-0.
 
Adams’ Megan Richardson made 12 saves for MCLA (3-12, 2-5), who will be seeded fifth in this week’s conference tournament.
 
Men’s Cross Country
WESTFIELD, Mass. -- The MCLA men's cross country team finished sixthin the 2017 MASCAC Championships. Fitchburg State took home the team title while Falcon runner Brian Amaral (25 minutes, 41 seconds) was the top individual.
 
Trailblazer Jeremiah Jones finished 19th overall with a time of 28:07 in the 8k run through Stanley Park. Christopher Gamble ran the race in 29:05 to finish 32nd.
 
Also competing for MCLA were Avery Woodbury (33rd), Corey Powers (36th), Owen Fitzgerald (42nd), Paul Davila (46th), and Theodore Jones (47th).
 
The Trailblazers are off next week and will run in the NCAA New England Regionals hosted by Southern Maine in two weeks.
 
Women’s Cross Country
WESTFIELD, Mass. -- The MCLA women's cross country team finished seventh in the MASCAC Championships hosted by Westfield State. 
 
Worcester State claimed the 2017 team championship while Westfield State's Jess Cardin (18 minutes, 19 seconds) took home individual honors.
 
MCLA was paced by Julie Gambill's 24th-place finish. The first year runner covered the 5-kilometer course at Stanley Park in 21:52.
 
Trailblazer Kaitlin Wright finished in 33rd place running the course in 24:32.  Jordan Daegatano was next across for MCLA finishing in 37th place.
 
Others competing for MCLA were Hunter Schrade (38th) while Breanna Castor finished 39th.  
 
The Trailblazers are off next week and will conclude the season at the NCAA New England Regionals hosted by Southern Maine in two weeks.
