Sfakianaki Helps MCLA Tennis Earn League Win

NORTH ADAMS, Mass. -- The MCLA women's tennis team rolled past visiting Green Mountain 8-1 Saturday afternoon in NAC play at Zavattaro complex.
 
MCLA improves to 2-2 on the season and is now 1-1 in the conference.  The Eagles drop to 1-5 and are 0-2 in the league.
 
MCLA (2-2, 1-1) rolled through the doubles portion of the match as their top duo of Sam Gawron and Williamstown’s Mariza Sfakianaki dispatched Claire Chapman and Nelly O'Connell, 8-4.  In the second doubles match, Trailblazers Brianna Higgins and Ashley Juskhas won, 8-2, over Paige Vlahos and Ruby Santiago.  MCLA completed the sweep when Lauren Kexel and Katherine Grill won 8-3 over Lauren Coye and Danjung Yoon.
 
In singles play, Sfakianaki and Gawron cruised for their second points of the afternoon.  Juskhas, Kexel, and Grill also won in straight sets for the Trailblazers.
 
Green Mountain's lone point came out of the third singles match as O'Connell defeated Higgins in three sets.
 
MCLA is back in action on Tuesday when they head to Castleton for a 4 p.m. start.
 
MEN’S SOCCER
WORCESTER, Mass. -- Worcester State's Mitch Myrthil tallied in the fourth minute and Lancer keeper Jason Barrett posted a shutout in leading the Lancers to a 2-0 victory over MCLA in the MASCAC opener for both teams.
 
Myrthil knocked home a pass from Justin Echeverry just four minutes into the game to make it 1-0 WSU in the early stages. While WSU (3-1, 1-0) held a slim shot advantage, Myrthil's goal held up at halftime for the Lancer lead.
 
In the 50th minute, leading scorer Bryan Brasil would connect off a feed from Andre Ipojuca to increase the lead to 2-0. The goal was Brasil's fourth of the week after a hat trick earlier this week.  From there, Barrett took over.
 
Barrett collected four saves to earn the shutout, including a pair of quality saves late in the contest.  MCLA (2-4, 0-1) actually outshot Worcester State 14-13, many of them coming late in the second half.
 
Kamron Anderson absorbed the loss for MCLA stopping four shots in defeat.
 
MCLA will travel to Skidmore on Tuesday for a non league tilt.
 
VOLLEYBALL
SCHENECTADY, N.Y. -- The MCLA volleyball team dropped a pair of games on day two of the Union Tournament Saturday afternoon.
 
The Trailblazers (2-10) lost to host Union and Skidmore by identical 3-0 scores.
 
The Trailblazers fell to Union by scores of 25-19, 25-17, and 25-16 in the opener.  
 
Two Trailblazers had five kills as Maggie Allen and Brooke Queripel led the offense. Natasha Stewart added 9 assists while Mele Enomoto and Sara LaFreniere had 12 and 11 digs respectively.
 
Union was paced by Gillian Gore's match best 15 kills while teammate Julia Louis had 11.
 
In the nightcap against Skidmore, the Thoroughbreds won by scores of 25-17, 25-10, and 25-10 to earn the victory. MCLA struggled as they committed 15 hitting errors in the contest.
 
Queripel and LaFreniere each had 4 kills while Stewart added 7 assists. Enomoto continued her strong play collecting 11 digs on the afternoon.
 
MCLA is back in action on Wednesday when it hosts Williams College at 7 p.m.
