The Boys & Girls Club of the Berkshires received a donation of $9,948 from the Pittsfield Ninety Nine Restaurant. Joe Hassoun (left), who accounted for the most customer donations during the October event, presents a check to Boys & Girls Club of the Berkshires Executive Director Chris Jacoby.

Ninety-nine hundred thank yous: The Boys & Girls Club of the Berkshires has received a $9,948 donation from the Pittsfield Ninety Nine Restaurant as part of the restaurant chain's annual October fund raising efforts on behalf of local Boys & Girls Clubs. The amount raised by the Pittsfield Ninety Nine, located at 699 Merrill Road, was the eighth highest of the 106 Ninety Nine stores participating in fundraising efforts for their local Boys & Girls Clubs.

The money was raised with support of the staff, which asked each and every guest to help us support our Boys & Girls Club and put together gift baskets and homemade baked goods to raffle off and sell. The restaurant offered three special entrees that automatically contribute $1 to the cause every time that item is ordered. In addition, there was one night, the "Dine for a Cause Night," when 15 percent of every order was donated.

The Club will use the donation to support the many programs and services it conducts for the local youth of Berkshire County.

Input sought: The City of Pittsfield, through its Human Services Advisory Council (HSAC), is asking the public for input on the human service needs in Pittsfield.

The HSAC is an 11-member advisory committee that makes funding recommendations to the mayor on how the city should allocate its human services funding.  One of the considerations that the HSAC uses to make those recommendations is to consider the views of Pittsfield residents and others.  New for this year, the HSAC will also consider comments from organizations that serve Pittsfield residents.  Deadline to submit input is Jan. 30.

Comments may be submitted by: email at hsac@pittsfieldch.com; phone at 413-499-9367, teletype at 413-499-9340; or by mail to Justine Dodds, Pittsfield Department of Community Development, 70 Allen St., Pittsfield, MA 01201.

Good choice: In a workshop series called "Guiding Good Choices," parents will learn how to strengthen their bonds with their children and reduce the risk that their children will use drugs. The five-week program is being offered by the Northern Berkshire Community Coalition (nbCC) for five weeks beginning Thursday, Jan. 12, from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. in the nbCC second floor conference room located at 61 Main St., North Adams.

Guiding Good Choices is an interactive program for all parents of children in grades four through eight. In a lively and open atmosphere, parents will learn specific strategies to help their children avoid drug use and other adolescent problem behaviors, and develop into healthy adults. Parents will learn to set clear family guidelines on drugs, as well as learn and practice skills to strengthen family bonds, help their children develop healthy behaviors, and increase children's involvement in the family. The program is based on research which has shown that when children are bonded to their parents, school and non-drug-using peers, they are less likely to get involved in drug use or other behavior problems.

The series is sponsored by the nbCC’s nb21 program and The Family Place. There is no cost to parents. Dinner and child care are provided. For more information, please call Chris Griffin at 413-663-7588, ext 24.
