3rd Annual
Unsilent Night North Adams
MASS MoCA Courtyard by Tunnel City Coffee
5 pm
Free!
for more information

This will be the third year the piece is performed in North Adams, and we are thrilled that Phil Kline will be joining us to kick off this inaugural event!

Phil Kline's Unsilent Night is a free outdoor participatory sound sculpture of many individual parts, recorded on cassettes, CDs, mp3s, and the Unsilent Night app, and played through a roving swarm of boomboxes carried through city streets every December. People bring their own boomboxes or other music-amplifying devices and drift peacefully through a cloud of sound which is different from every listener's perspective. Since 1992, this 45-minute work has grown into a worldwide annual communal event that has become an essential part of many winter holiday celebrations.

For the North Adams, MA edition, participants will gather in the MASS MoCA parking lot beginning at 5:15pm for distribution of a limited number of boomboxes and cassette tapes, as well as technical assistance as necessary. At 5:30pm, Phil Kline will lead the group chorus of boomboxes and other devices on a 40 minute walk up through downtown North Adams, ending at MCLA Gallery 51 for the opening of the 99cent show.
