Sfakianaki Helps MCLA Tennis Win Fifth Match

JOHNSON, Vt.- The MCLA women's tennis team rallied from an early deficit to earn a hard fought 5-4 win over the Johnson State Badgers on Saturday.
 
The Trailblazers (5-3, 3-1 NAC) seemed in control after taking a pair of hard fought doubles matches. Mariza Sfakianaki paired with Brian Higgins to earn a point via an 8-6 win in the top doubles slot. Sarah Hachadourian teamed with Anna Despart to earn another point by an identical 8-6 margin while JSC (6-2)  took the third doubles point. MCLA held a slim 2-1 lead heading into the singles matches.
 
JSC quickly took the lead when Grace Page, Kali Covell, and Nicole Monick earned wins out of the 2nd, 4th, and 5th singles matches. MCLA rallied however, as Samantha Gawron got MCLA a point via a convincing 6-1, 6-0 win in the third singles match making it 4-3 in favor of JSC with two matches still playing.
 
Sfakianaki outlasted Katerina Van Woerkom 4-6, 7-5, 6-2 to square the match out of the top singles slot. From there, the match came down to the sixth singles match pitting MCLA's Hachadourian with JSC's Jordan Miller.
 
Hachadourian claimed the first set 6-3 but dropped the second 7-6 (6-5) to set up a winner take all third.  Hachadourian buckled down and earned the match point via a 6-3 third set win giving the Trailblazers a come from behind win.
 
MCLA will look to continue their winning ways on Wednesday when they travel up to Colby-Sawyer for a 3:30 p.m. match.
 
Men’s Soccer
NORTH ADAMS, Mass. -- Issa Jalloh scored his first career goal Saturday to give the MCLA men’s soccer team a 1-1 draw with Salem State.
 
Jalloh posted the unassisted goal in the 79th minute to help the TrailBlazers stay at .500 on the season at 4-4-1 (1-0-1 MASCAC).
 
Kamron Anderson stopped six shots in the MCLA goal.
 
The Blazers travel to Westfield State next weekend.
 
Women’s Soccer
SALEM, Mass. -- The Salem State women’s soccer team scored twice in the second half on Saturday to earn a 2-0 over MCLA.
 
Megan Richardson stopped 12 shots for the Trailblazers (2-3-2, 0-1-1 MASCAC), which hosts Southern Vermont on Tuesday evening.
