MCLA Volleyball, Men's Soccer Victorious

NORWICH, Vt. -- The MCLA volleyball team needed to get back on track after a rough start to 2016 and they did so in sweeping a pair of matches Saturday at Norwich.
 
The Trailblazers handled Norwich 3-0 in the opener before outlasting Lyndon State 3-2 in the nightcap. With the wins, MCLA improves to 3-5 on the season heading into their MASCAC opener on Tuesday night.
 
In the opener against Norwich, MCLA took the match by set scores of 25-19, 25-17, and 25-17.  Sam Anderson paced the offense with 10 kills on just 18 attacks. Beatrice Lechler fed her all day as she notched 12 assists in the win.  The defense was spearheaded by Chanielle Enomoto and Tessa Sestito who each had 8 digs.
 
Bri O'Rourke also collected five aces in the win.
 
In the nightcap, the Trailblazers defeated the Hornets in a five setter. MCLA took the opening set 25-22 before dropping sets 2 and 3 by scores of 25-21 and 25-20. The Trailblazers stayed alive by winning the fourth 25-22 before earning the victory 15-10 in the final set.
 
Anderson once again had 10 kills while Maggie Allen also chipped in with 10. Taylor Wiese had a solid day with 24 assists. Sestito also had 13 assists in the match. Samantha DeCarlo had a season best 19 digs in the win.
 
The Trailblazers are back in action next Tuesday when they host Westfield State in the home opener.
 
MEN’S SOCCER
NORTH ADAMS, Mass. -- The MCLA men's soccer team came out firing against visiting Johnson State as they scored three goals in the opening four minutes en route to a decisive 8-0 win over the Badgers.
 
Anthony Basile scored a pair of goals to lead the offense. Jesse Moore added a goal and two assists for MCLA (2-2).
 
Basile scored off a Jesse Moore feed just 40 seconds into the contest for an early 1-0 advantage. Just three minutes later, Ed Boateng would convert a long pass from Sakan Sadowsky for a 2-0 lead. A minute later, Oscar Castro knocked home another Moore pass making it 3-0 and the rout was on.
 
MCLA added another first half goal from Basile, along with markers from Moore, Patrick Mahoney, and Andrew Nygard to take a 7-0 lead into halftime.
 
The Trailblazers owned a 22-0 shot advantage in the opening 45 minutes.
 
Augustin Ndayikeza scored in the second half for MCLA.
 
The Trailblazers are back in action Sunday as the CIAO Classic continues. They will battle UMass Boston at 1 p.m. The Badgers (1-3) will take on Union in the opener tomorrow at 11 a.m.
