NORTH ADAMS, Mass. — The 17th annual Eagle Street Beach Party will be held on Friday night beginning at 3:30.

Some 125 tons of sand donated by Specialty Minerals will be spread by the Department of Public Works along the historic one-way street to create a community sculpture. The sand will later be stored for use at Fish Pond's beach.

The beach event, originated by artist Eric Rudd in 1999, has become a summer staple for creative fun in the sand. It starts with the family friendly event from 3:30 to 6:30, followed by 6th annual Evening Fiesta for adults from 7 to 10.

Eagle Street merchants and enthusiastic businesses have contributed sand toys as well as prizes for the most creative sand castles or sand sculptures. Rudd's Berkshire Artist Museum is sponsoring the event and will feature the art exhibition "That '70s Show" from 6 to 9. Jack's has donated 60 gift certificates good for one hot dog. Other merchants have given gifts and certificates to their stores and 250 SteepleCats tickets will be given to children 12 and under.

Mildred Elley's Pittsfield Campus has donated 300 sand pails and shovels free for all participants to use and keep; Adams Community Bank, MountainOne Bank, and Smith Watson & Co. CPAs are contributing the entertainment and out-of-pocket expenses for both events.

No artistic experience is necessary — just the willingness to get into the sand and have fun. Beach attire is recommended. Food color dye is acceptable, but no spray paint; smoking is not allowed during this event.

Beginning at 7, there will be adult games with live music by singer Lita Williams and Desperados will be serving margaritas and Mexican Corona beer.

Bring ID for purchase of alcohol; no alcohol will be permitted outside the sand area.

In case of inclement weather, the event will be the following Friday, July 17.

Volunteers are needed to help spread the sand at starting at 1:30 p.m.; shovels provided, just show up.

In addition to those listed, the Eagle Street Beach and Fiesta are also supported by the North Adams Chamber of Commerce, Keith Bona, Don Dix/DWD Masonry, First Baptist Church, and the merchants and businesses on historic Eagle Street.
