NORTH ADAMS, Mass. — MCLA senior Elizabeth Doughty of Westford, Mass., finished up her winter break with a trip to Philadelphia, where she received the Kerkor “Koko” Kassabian Eastern Athletic Trainers’ Association (EATA) Scholarship Award earlier this month at the organization’s annual conference.

According to Ryan Krzyzanowicz, an assistant professor of biology and the clinical education coordinator of MCLA’s Athletic Training Education Program, Doughty won the scholarship – which consisted of $3,000 to cover education costs and a plaque – over students that applied from programs in Connecticut, Massachusetts, Maine, New Hampshire, Rhode Island, Vermont, Delaware, New York, New Jersey and Pennsylvania.

Krzyzanowicz, who has been Doughty’s advisor and faculty mentor for the past three and a half years, said she represents MCLA’s Athletic Training Program “in spectacular ways,” whether she’s in the classroom, serving in leadership positions on campus, or on clinical education rotations.

“Liz embodies the qualities of a future leader in athletic training, and that is part of the reason why the scholarship selection committee chose her,” Krzyzanowicz said.

“I am extremely honored to have been awarded the scholarship,” Doughty said. “Words cannot accurately capture how much this means to me. It is a huge help paying for my last semester here at MCLA.”

Doughty also was honored with two other awards within the past year. Last spring she received both the MCLA Health Science Achievement Award and the MCLA Faculty Association Outstanding Student Award.

Extremely active on campus, Doughty works as a resident adviser in the Flagg Townhouse Complex. A member of the National Residence Hall Honorary, she served as its president last year, and has been part of the L.E.A.D. (Leadership, Education, Action, Development) Academy staff for the past three summers.

In addition to serving as an admissions ambassador, Doughty is a tutor for other athletic training majors, and is the president of the Biology Club. For the past three years, she’s served as president of the Class of 2015.

As an athletic training major, Doughty is required to complete 150 hours of clinical experience each semester. Throughout her educational career, she’s worked with MCLA Athletics, MCLA Dance Medicine, Williams College football, and men’s soccer and basketball teams at Southern Vermont College.

Doughty expects to graduate summa cum laude this May.
