In July 2013, Private Chelsea (formerly Bradley) Manning was sentenced to 35 years in prison after publishing the largest set of classified documents ever leaked to the public. The conviction provoked a maelstrom of media coverage, ranging from portraits of Manning’s personal life to new dialogues about military abuses. In producer Beth Morrison’s latest work-in-progress, Ted Hearn and director Daniel Fish dive headfirst into this digital storm with an assemblage of Twitter feeds, chat transcripts, and court testimony, wound together in an arresting music-theater production.

Magical guitarist Gary Lucas performs his original live score to a touchstone of Chinese cinema. Directed by Wu Yonggang and starring the incomparable Shanghai diva Ruan Lingyu, The Goddess (1934) tells the tragic tale of a young single mother forced into prostitution in Shanghai — the “Paris of the East” — in order to raise money for the education of her son. Lucas’s score draws upon his extensive knowledge of 1930s Shanghai pop, also displayed prominently in his celebrated album The Edge of Heaven.
