NORTH ADAMS, Mass. — Third-seeded MCLA (14-12) placed four players in double figures en route to an 83-76 MASCAC quarterfinal victory over sixth-seeded Fitchburg State (16-9).
MCLA began to stretch its lead early on in the second half. After being knotted up at halftime, the Trailblazers led 53-49 after Fitchburg's Amy Fahey connected on two of her game-high 26 points. MCLA would then go on a quick 5-0 burst to push ahead by nine at 58-49 with 11:59 to play.
Fitchburg would again cut the margin to five at 66-61, but MCLA once again answered the bell, this time Jen Wehner putback and a Sara Hamiton jumper to lead 70-61 with under five minutes to play. Fitchburg would cut into the deficit one last time getting as close as 77-73 following a Meagan Secino triple with 2:11 left.
Trailblazer Alie Dobrovolc answered with a jumper on the next possesion, then following a defensive stop, Lucy Tremblay provided the dagger, drilling home a three pointer, her sixth of the night, putting MCLA on top at 82-73. Fitchburg would never threaten from there.
Tremblay was 8-20 from the floor, including a 6-12 performance from beyond the arc en route to her 23 points. Dobrovolc filled the stat sheet as she finished with 17 points, 9 rebounds, 7 assists, and 3 steals. Wehner, who returned from an ankle injury, had a double-double of 17 points and 13 rebounds. Katelyn Chenevert chipped in with 12 points and added 6 assists.
The Falcons held a slight edge off the glass 43-41, while MCLA forced 20 turnovers on the night.
The Trailblazers advance into the conference semifinals where they will battle second-seeded Salem State University Friday night at 7:30 p.m. at Bridgewater State.
