An image of the 353rd Infantry in France taken two minutes before the armistice ending World War I went into effect.

Veterans Day falls on Tuesday, Nov. 11, which is a state and federal holiday. Most Veterans Day events will be observed on Monday.

The federal holiday is to commemorate the service of the nation's military veterans in ensuring peace.

It was first known as Armistice Day to mark the end of World War I at the 11th hour, on the 11th day of the 11th month of 1918. In recognition of the efforts of World War II veterans, President Eisenhower in 1954 signed legislation creating Veterans Day with the goal of honoring all American veterans.

Closed on Tuesday, Nov. 11:
Federal, state and local offices; no mail delivery.
Public colleges and schools, most private schools
Public libraries
Most offices and businesses
BRTA is not running

Open both days:
Most retail outlets, groceries
Restaurants and bars, by choice
Convenience stores

Veterans Day Parades, Ceremonies on Tuesday

North Adams parade begins at the American Legion at 10:40 and concludes with ceremonies at the Veterans Memorial. This year's speaker is retired Marine Col. Allan M Faxon Jr., chief operating officer of the Vermont Veterans Home in Bennington.

Richard A. Ruether Post 152 American Legion will honor Navy Yeoman 1st Class Francis E. Lovejoy, who was killed in action on Nov. 12, 1942, at Guadalcanal, at Hancock Cemetery, Route 43, with full military honors.

Adams American Legion Post 160 holds a ceremony at 11 at Town Hall.

Pittsfield parade begins at City Hall at 10 a.m., heading down Fenn, North and South streets to the Peace Memorial on Veterans Way for a ceremony. Keynote speaker will be Cpl. Michael Ancora of Marine Corps League Detachment 137 and the Berkshire Veteran Coalition will announce the Veteran of the Year for 2014.

Other events

"Up Front for DeMar" 5K road race in honor of the late Spc. Michael DeMarsico begins on Sunday at 9 a.m. at the North Adams Veterans Memorial at the corner of Eagle and Union streets. A dinner is also being held on Saturday night at the American Legion.
