An image of the 353rd Infantry in France taken two minutes before the armistice ending World War I went into effect.

Veterans Day falls on Saturday, Nov. 11, but will be observed on Friday, Nov. 10, as a state and federal holiday.

The federal holiday is to commemorate the service of the nation's military veterans in ensuring peace.

It was first known as Armistice Day to mark the end of World War I at the 11th hour, on the 11th day of the 11th month of 1918. In recognition of the efforts of World War II veterans, President Eisenhower in 1954 signed legislation creating Veterans Day with the goal of honoring all American veterans.

Veterans Day Parades, Ceremonies on Saturday

North Adams: The parade has been canceled because of the expected frigid temperatures; ceremonies will take place at the American Legion at 11. The special dedication for Spc. Michael D. DeMarsico II will take place at 12:15 p.m. at the North Adams Armory; Ashland Street between Washington and Porter will be closed from noon to 1 p.m.

The Pittsfield parade begins at City Hall at 10 a.m., heading down Fenn, North and South streets to the Peace Memorial on Veterans Way for a ceremony at about 10:45. A light reception for veterans and their family members will be held from 11:30 to 3 p.m. at the VA Outpatient Clinic at 73 Eagle St.

In case of inclement weather, the exercises will be held at Morningside Community School at 100 Burbank St.

Peter Cook VFW Post 9144 in Clarksburg rededicates the honor roll and celebrates the refurbished facade at Town Hall at 9 a.m.

Adams American Legion Post 160 holds a ceremony at 11 at Town Hall.

Williamstown's American Legion Post 152 Veterans will conduct Veteran's Day Ceremonies at Field Park, time: 11:11, following Field Park, ceremonies will take place at Westlawn Cemetery, Eastlawn Cemetery, and SouthLawn Cemetery.
