Veterans Day falls on Sunday, Nov. 11, which means the following Monday is a state and federal holiday. Most Veterans Day events will be observed on Sunday.
The federal holiday is to commemorate the service of the nation's military veterans in ensuring peace.
It was first known as Armistice Day to mark the end of World War I at the 11th hour, on the 11th day of the 11th month of 1918. In recognition of the efforts of World War II veterans, President Eisenhower in 1954 signed legislation creating Veterans Day with the goal of honoring all American veterans.
Closed on Monday, Nov. 12:

Veterans Day Parades on Sunday (those highlighted have not been confirmed yet)
North Adams parade begins at the American Legion at 10:30 and concludes with ceremonies at the Veterans Memorial.
Richard A. Ruether Post 152 American Legion holds ceremonies at 11 at the post home on Latham Street, Williamstown, followed by speakers and awards inside.
Clarksburg ceremonies begin at 9 a.m. at Clarksburg Cemetery, followed by another one at Town Hall.
Adams American Legion Post 160 holds a ceremony at 11 at Town Hall.
Pownal, Vt., Post 90 will hold ceremonies at 6:30 p.m. at the post, followed by a potluck dinner.
The Lenox VFW is sponsoring its annual Veterans Day dinner Sunday from 5 to 7 at St. Ann's Parish Center. Any Lenox veteran who would like to attend should call Sean Ward at 413-822-4343.
Parades on Monday
Pittsfield parade begins at City Hall at 10 a.m., heading down Fenn, North and South streets to the Peace Memorial on Veterans Way for a ceremony.
Other events
Northern Berkshire Christian Church, 55 Harding Ave., North Adams, is holding its fifth annual free dinner to honor local veterans and their families on Sunday from 5-6:30 p.m.
'Up Front for DeMar" 5K road race in honor of the late Spc. Michael DeMarsico begins at 9 a.m. at the North Adams American Legion.
