Mary E. Bua, 82

June 14, 2009

NORTH ADAMS, Mass. — Mary Elinor Bua, 82, of 100 Woodlawn Ave. died Sunday, June 14, 2009, at North Adams Regional Hospital, surrounded by her family.

Born in North Adams on April 1, 1927, daughter of Rocco DiDonna and Josephine Polumbo DiDonna Crews, she attended North Adams schools, including the former St. Joseph's High School, and graduated from Drury High School.

Mrs. Bua retired as a proofreader from Excelsior Process & Engraving. She worked for the North Adams Public Schools for a long time and earlier at the former Sprague Electric Co., where she wrote for its newsletter The Log. In her teens, she worked as a nanny for Drs. William and Rosemarie Bowman.

She was a communicant of the former St. Anthony of Padua Church and was a member of its Rosary Society and bazaar committee. She said the rosary daily and visited with Father DiOrio. In her youth, she sang with the Berkshire Bach Society. She enjoyed knitting, crocheting, sewing, reading, and was a member of The Socialites. Mrs. Bua was an avid Red Sox fan and enjoyed watching "Jeopardy." She and her husband, Carmen J. "Gus" Bua, traveled throughout the nation and abroad.

Besides her husband, whom she married Aug. 17, 1947, in St. Anthony's Church, she leaves a daughter, Elena M. Sprague, with whom she resided; a son, Richard M. Bua and his wife, Debra, of Clarksburg; a brother, Lewis DiDonna of Colonie, N.Y.; three grandchildren, Amy E. Briggs and her husband, James, of Clarksburg, Christa M. Sprague of North Adams and Michael R. Bua of Norwood; two great-grandsons, Tyler J. Briggs and Logan M. Briggs of Clarksburg, her former son-in-law, Mark P. Sprague of North Adams, and nieces, nephews, grandnieces and grandnephews.

She was predeceased by four brothers and two sisters, Ralph, John and Andrew DiDonna, Raymond Crews, Antoinette Stoddard and Gloria Coy.

FUNERAL NOTICE — The funeral for Mrs. Bua will be Wednesday, June 17, at 10:15 a.m. from Flynn & Dagnoli-Montagna Home for Funerals, West Chapels, 521 West Main St., North Adams, followed by a Funeral Mass at 11 at St. Elizabeth of Hungary Church. Burial will follow in Southview Cemetery.

Calling hours will be Tuesday from 4 to 7. Donations may be made to the local St. Vincent DePaul Society in care of the funeral home.

Elena, I have so many fond memories or you and your mother when we were growing up. All those times when she gave us a ride to school. She was a special person and she was so proud of you. You and your family are in my thoughts and prayers. She will stay alive in your hear forever. God Bless.
