Earl W. Pelkey

Earl William Pelkey, 78, of 31 Pomeroy Ave. died Monday at Craneville Place, where he had been a resident for two weeks. He had lived in Dalton since 1966.

Born in Dalton on Feb. 9, 1923, son of Edward and Birdella Crosier Pelkey, he attended local schools.

An Army veteran of World War II, he served in Normandy with the 840th Army Corps of Engineers. While in Normandy for three years, he was in charge of heavy equipment, and helped level and prepare air strips and build bridges. Pelkey returned to the United States in 1945.

He was employed as an operating engineer with J.H. Maxymillian Construction Co. from 1979 until his retirement in 1994. He worked on the demolition project for the GE 20s complex on East Street. Previously, he had worked as a heavy equipment operator for Farrell and Gregory. He worked on projects such as the Eisenhower Locks on the Saint Lawrence Seaway to refineries in the San Francisco Bay area. He worked for the S.J. Grove for 15 years and set the bridges on the New York Thruway in the Syracuse area. He worked on building the student union at the University of Massachusetts and set the steel for the former Hilton Hotel.

He was a member of the Dalton Veterans of Foreign Wars. An outdoorsman, he enjoyed fishing and hunting.

He leaves his wife, the former Nancy E. Leabo, whom he married Sept. 1, 1957, in Pownal, Vt., and two sons, Rodney R. Pelkey and Edward D. Pelkey, both of Dalton. He was predeceased by three brothers, Edward L. Pelkey, late of New Jersey, who died in 1960; Joseph D. Pelkey, late of Novato, Calif., who died in 1993; and Elmer E. Pelkey, late of Pittsfield, who died in 2001; and a sister, Elaine R. Girard, late of Cheshire, who died in 1992.

Funeral services will be Thursday, Jan. 17, at 10 at the DERY-FOLEY FUNERAL HOME, with the Rev. John R. Smith, pastor of the Dalton United Methodist Church, officiating. Burial will follow in Ashuelot Cemetery. Calling hours will be today, Wednesday, from 4 to 7 at the funeral home. In lieu of flowers, contributions in Mr. Pelkey's memory may be made to the Alzheimer's Disease and Related Disorders Association in care of the Dery-Foley Funeral Home, 890 East Main St., Dalton, MA 01226.
