Berkshire Fire Departments Awarded Safety Equipment Grants

STOW, Mass. — The Healey-Driscoll Administration today announced $5 million in awards to 321 Massachusetts fire departments through the state’s Firefighter Safety Equipment Grant program.   "Every single day, firefighters across Massachusetts put themselves in harm’s way to protect their communities," said Governor Maura Healey. BCC to Hold Open House

NORTH ADAMS, Mass. — The city rejected artistic crosswalks two years ago but a new councilor has again raised the idea.   This time, the federal government looks to be on his side.    "My purpose here is to produce street crossings for pedestrians which are safe, visible and beautiful for our residents, students and guests, no matter how they get around the city, so that goes for drivers just as much as it goes for pedestrians," said Councilor Andrew Fitch, who gave a short presentation at Tuesday's council meeting.   "Some potential solutions could be using technological advancements using bright or reflective paint or some other type of

Anna Yan Ji Arabia's fight against cancer inspired her parents to help other families find a cure.  NORTH ADAMS, Mass. — Joe and Kathy Arabia hosted a mini-golf tournament a decade ago to raise money for reasearch on childhood cancer after the death of their daughter, 16-year-old Anna Yan Ji Arabia.   Kathy Arabia said they'd hoped to raise $1,000 — and instead raised 11 times that amount.    "We raised $11,000 and that all went to research and it's been incredible since then," she said. Crane Stationery Future Uncertain With Reports of Layoffs

COHOES, N.Y. — Mohawk Fine Papers, which owns Crane Stationery, is reportedly being acquired by the international Fedrigoni Group and employees at Crane were laid off.    The news was reported Wednesday by Albany Business Review, which also confirmed that 75 people in the Crane unit were notified on Tuesday that they were laid off "effective immediately."   The deal appears to be affecting what's left of the 220-year-old Crane Stationery, which Mohawk purchased in 2018. North Adams Swears in New Firefighters

NORTH ADAMS, Mass. — Two new firefighters were sworn in on Tuesday night during City Council   Jeffrey Rodrigues and Jeffrey Tykot graduated Jan. 26 from the Massachusetts Firefighting Academy in Springfield having completed the 50-day Career Recruit Firefighting Training Program.   Mayor Jennifer Macksey introduced the firefighters, noting Rodrigues, of Dorchester, is a veteran of the Army Reserve and holds a bachelor of arts with a concentration in criminal justice from the University of Massachusetts at Boston.    Tykot, of Williamstown, was a member of the New Ashford Fire Department and is a licensed emergency medical technician with Northern Berkshire EMS. Steeple City Plaza Sold for $1.75M; V&V Liquors Closes

Berkshire Running Sets Full Year of Charity Runs

PITTSFIELD, Mass. -- Berkshire Running Foundation has released the 2024 Race Calendar for the local nonprofit with several new events scheduled throughout the county.   Following its first official year operating as a nonprofit entity in 2023, the 501c3 organization, which has a mission of advancing and expanding on the positive impact the running community has on the neighborhoods we live, produced, and directed eight events in 2023.
